Oklahoma bull ri= der takes the lead at Cord McCoy Invitational

ADA, Okla. – Trevor Kastner didn’t have to dri= ve too far to be part of the Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. Cord McCoy Invitational presented by Ariat and Cooper Tires.

It’s about 60 miles f= rom Kastner’s Ardmore, Okla., home to the Pontotoc County Agri-Plex, but the 22-year-old cowboy ma= de the most of every mile. He scored 86.5 points in the first go-round of Friday’s performance, then added an 87.5 i= n the championship round to take the lead in the average with a total of 174 poin= ts.

“It’s good to c= ome to a good event like this that’s so close to home,” Kastner said. “You know when you come to this deal that you’re going to= get on good bulls, and I’m just glad I could take care of my end of the deal.”

He has been riding professi= onally since he became eligible just four years ago. He’ll await the Saturday night performance to see how he fares in the two-night event – 40 bull riders rode in the opening round Friday, and the top 10 qualified for the s= hort go-round; another 40 will compete again Saturday night in the same format, = and the winner will be based on the highest marked rides at the conclusion of t= he event.

The Cord McCoy Invitational= is a Touring Pro Division event sanctioned by the Professional Bull Riders organization, and many of the cowboys competing are trying to work their way onto the premier tour, the Built Ford Tough Series. Still, the minor league= -style event has a major league flavor – many of the elite cowboys in the ga= me make their way to Ada to compete.

&nbs= p;        A year ago, Dave Jantzi of Sugar Creek, Ohio, was on the sidelines watching the action recovering from an injury. On Frid= ay night while representing Team Ada Travel Stop, = he and partner Anthony Moore, of Council, Okla., won the opening go-round of the Professional Bullfighters Daisy Protection Bullfight Tour event with 211 points.

&nbs= p;        “We’ve worked together some over the years,” Jantzi said of Moore. “It helps us, to a degree, in that if you’re playing on the same playbook and you have a partner as aggressive as Anthony, you know you just have to take care of your business.

&nbs= p;        “In the PBF, being aggressive is the key, and that gave us an advantage.”=
